Reasons why the Eagles should sign Jadeveon Clowney despite the reports of the team not being intere

Should the Philadelphia Eagles sign Jadeveon Clowney?

When I hear the name "Jadeveon Clowney" I still visualize the unleashing of that seismic hit he put on that Michigan running back, popping off his helmet, and jarring the ball loose for a fumble in the process during the 2013 Outback Bowl.

That visual alone is one of many reasons why you still need to keep your eye on this 6'5, 255-pound explosive specimen.

It has been roughly two months since the NFL free agency started, yet Clowney remains unsigned, so clearly there are concerns about his market value.

It is known among NFL executives that Clowney has had a history of injuries since he first entered the league with the Houston Texans as the number one overall pick in the 2014 NFL Draft.

Clowney also battled injuries playing for the Seattle Seahawks last year, for he played 13 regular-season games and only finished with 3.5 sacks in 2019.

Due to Clowney's quiet market value, I would say he should be more than motivated to prove the doubters wrong.

When motivated and healthy, Clowney was a three-time Pro Bowler with the Texans from 2016-18 with a total of 24.5 sacks and two defensive touchdowns.

The three-time Pro Bowler is only 27 years old and appears to have a lot of football left in his career.

Clowney's asking price from reports is a long-term contract worth 20 million a year, which allegedly later dropped to 17 million a year.

Reports also show that Eagles GM Howie Roseman is interested in Clowney, but would only negotiate a deal for 10 million or less.

The Eagles could hold out on working a deal with Clowney until his asking price drops, giving his injury history and quiet market value in 2020.

I know there are still sour grapes among the Philly faithful for Clowney's hit that knocked Eagles quarterback, Carson Wentz out of the 2020 NFC Wild-Card game against the Seahawks en route to a 17-9 loss.

Yes, we also remember Clowney's choice words for Eagles fans after the game, referring to them as "the worst fans in the world."

Yet, pump the breaks before you get up and arms over Clowney's comments because even our star athletes in Philadelphia have also called out the fans in the City of Brotherly Love.

Phillies all-time hit leader Jimmy Rollins is the first player that comes to mind, for he once referred to Phillies fans as "fair-weathered".

Sixers star Ben Simmons has also gotten hot bothered by fans in Philadelphia by saying, " if you’re going to boo, then stay on that side".

Even his budding star teammate, Sixers Joel Embiid has been testy with the fans in past by sharing a cryptic social media exchange with ex-Sixer Jimmy Butler on Instagram.

"If you dish it, you have to be able to take it," said Embiid in the past about the fans in Philly.

Regardless of the flock of boo-birds these star athletes faced in the building after their comments, Philly eventually forgave them.

With the litany of dual-threat quarterbacks in the NFL from reigning NFL MVP Lamar Jackson to reigning Super Bowl MVP Patrick Mahomes, you need explosive pass rushers who can get after the quarterback more than ever before.

Last year teams, such as the 2020 NFC Champions San Francisco 49ers have displayed that you can never have too many defensive linemen from Nick Bosa, DeForest Buckner, Arik Armstead, and Dee Ford to name a few.

Adding Clowney would be the perfect complement to Brandon Graham, Fletcher Cox, Derek Barnett, and Malik Jackson in Eagles defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz's 4-3 scheme.

Schwartz is not notorious for dialing up a plethora of blitz packages in his scheme, so you need defensive linemen who can win the individual battles in the trenches where most NFL games are won.

The Eagles finished the 2019 regular season with a solid 43 sacks, ranking 13th in the NFL, yet I think Clowney is the missing piece to making Philadelphia a top tier pass-rushing team.

I can forgive Clowney for the cheap hit on Wentz and even his comments about fans in Philadelphia.

If we are honest with ourselves some fans in Philly at times deserve to face a rude awakening.
