For Franklin, another rout with Captain Kev

Sep 29, 2014 BY BRENT BAUM For the Daily News A WEEK AFTER Ben Franklin High recorded the largest shutout in school history with a 60-0 victory over Olney, senior Kevin Caldwell completed 11 of 15 passes for 160 yards and three scores in a 40-6 rout over Martin Luther King on Saturday night at Marcus Foster Field. It didn't take long for Franklin's high-octane offense to score. On its first drive Caldwell threw a 40-yard strike to senior Rafael Rodriguez for the first of his three touchdowns to give the Electrons a 7-0 lead in the first quarter. King simply could not get its fingerprints on this game, as Franklin recovered a sack fumble and on the ensuing possession Caldwell hit junior Rasheem James on a 35-yard touchdown pass. Preceded by Caldwell connecting again with Rodriguez on a 13-yard touchdown pass to give the Electrons a 21-0 lead at halftime. Ben Franklin scored 33 unanswered points in three quarters that was capped off by Rodriguez's exhilarating 87-yard interception return for a touchdown who was gasping for breath at the end of the return as his teammates bombarded him with excitement. "We have a lot of weapons, for our running backs are explosive, offensive line is good, and with all of our receivers if I give them the ball at 3 yards, they can take it for a touchdown," Caldwell said. "In the offseason we played 83 7-on-7 games and went to Baltimore, West Virginia and New Jersey with the next level of quarterbacks. " "I think Kevin is the best quarterback in the Public League right now," Rodriguez said. "We have been together for 2 years and sit there with our quarterback after practice, so he knows exactly how fast our receivers are when running their routes and exactly where to put the ball. " Caldwell wears a superhero Captain American T-shirt underneath his Franklin uniform during every game. "My teammates just started calling me Captain Kev and I took it to the next level, with the star tights and the Captain American shirt," Caldwell said. Caldwell's favorite NFL player is the Seahawks' Russell Wilson and he plans on majoring in business and starting his own athletic sports company called, "Kev's." The Electrons' offensive line, awarded the game ball by coach David Carter, provided running lanes for Jymere Toney, who rushed for 75 yards on 13 carries, and Edward Dennis, who chipped in with 29 yards on six carries, two grabs for 27 yards and a score. King finally put an end to the scoring drought as sophomore Nasir Boykin hooked up with senior Jayni Harris for an 11-yard touchdown pass with 5:59 left in the fourth quarter. Boykin completed 10 of 21 passes for 63 yards and one touchdown. While junior Paul Sanchez added 82 yards on 10 carries for the Cougars. On the ensuing kickoff, the Cougars attempted an onside kick but it backfired as James dashed through a clear path down the sidelines for a 67-yard kick return touchdown to give the Electrons a 40-6 lead with 5:45 left in the fourth quarter. "Starting from the O-line, all the way to our weakest links it was hard work and dedication throughout the offseason," James said. "We all came from different place, we put these pieces together and we are trying to make history. " For the season, Caldwell has now completed 68 of 102 passes (66.7 percent) for 1,323 yards and 20 touchdowns. Franklin improves to 5-0, ending King's two-game win streak, and dropping it to 2-3.
